  • Understanding Inertia: Why Objects Maintain Motion
Inertia does not cause moving objects to continue moving. An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force. This property of matter is known as Newton's first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia. Inertia is the resistance of an object to any change in its state of motion.
