  • Lightning Composition: Understanding the Electrical Discharge
Lightning does not have protons, electrons, or neutrons. These particles are found in atoms, which are the basic building blocks of matter. Lightning is a large-scale electrical discharge that occurs between clouds or between a cloud and the ground. It is caused by the movement of massive charge separated within a cloud or cloud-to-ground through the atmosphere (or to a conductor in the case of strikes to buildings or power towers).
