The experimental discovery of a Bose glass (BG) state—predicted by pioneering theoretical work 40 years ago—would greatly enrich our knowledge of the behavior of disordered quantum many-body systems at low temperatures. For that, one needs to go beyond indirect observations of signatures hinting at the BG state. Two recent separate realizations in 3D optical lattice experiments and in 1D Bose gases provide clear-cut direct evidence for the elusive quantum phase.
