There seems to be some misunderstanding in your question. Crystals themselves do not possess the ability to change laser design. Lasers do not generate crystals through their operation.

Laser beams can interact with certain crystals when focused or passed through them, however, the crystals don't actively change anything in the laser, unless you refer to optical parametric oscillators lasers that utilize nonlinear optical crystals but there isn't any "uncanny" change involved but specific engineering process behind them.
