CargoLifter's airship, the CL160, is designed to transport heavy cargo up to 160 tons. It combines the features of a helicopter, a plane and an airship. The CL160 is an unmanned, lighter-than-air (aerostatic) vehicle that looks like a gigantic blimp. It has a rigid main body, three rotors, two wing pods and a gondola underneath containing a Rolls-Royce engine and a control room. The CL160 uses aerodynamic lift, the static lift of its gas and vertical thrust from its rotors for flight. It's powered by a turbine engine that drives three huge fans, propelling the ship through the sky. The CL160 also uses innovative "jet flaps," an active spoiler system that controls air flow and enables rapid ascent, descent and braking. The airship is made of lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced plastic and is filled with helium gas. The CL160 is 266 feet long, 170 feet wide and 85 feet high, and has a total volume of 12.6 million cubic feet. It can travel at a speed of up to 100 mph, has a range of 4,700 miles and can fly at an altitude of 20,000 feet.
