1. Loading:
- Before firing, a gun needs to be loaded with ammunition. Ammunition typically consists of a casing, a primer, propellant (gunpowder), and a projectile (bullet).
- Depending on the type of firearm, the ammunition may be loaded into a magazine, a cylinder, or directly into the chamber.
2. Firing:
- When the trigger of a gun is pulled, it initiates a series of mechanical actions that lead to the firing of the bullet:
a) Hammer/Striker Activation:
- Pulling the trigger releases the hammer or striker, which moves forward.
b) Primer Strike:
- The hammer or striker hits the primer located at the base of the cartridge, causing it to detonate.
c) Ignition and Pressure Build-up:
- The primer ignites the propellant, which rapidly burns and produces a large amount of hot gases and pressure.
d) Bullet Propulsion:
- The expanding gases generated by the burning propellant push the bullet out of the barrel through the muzzle at high speed.
3. Barrel and Rifling:
- The barrel of a gun is a metal tube through which the bullet travels. It is usually lined with spiral grooves called rifling.
- Rifling imparts a spinning motion to the bullet as it moves down the barrel, which increases its stability and accuracy in flight.
4. Extraction and Ejection:
- After the bullet is fired, the empty cartridge casing needs to be extracted from the chamber. This is typically done by an extractor, which pulls the casing out of the chamber.
- The extracted casing is then ejected from the gun through an ejection port by an ejector.
5. Reloading:
- Depending on the type of firearm, the gun may need to be manually reloaded or it can be semi-automatic or fully automatic.
- In semi-automatic guns, the recoil or a portion of the expanding gases from the fired round is used to cycle the action, eject the spent casing, and load a new round into the chamber.
- Fully automatic guns continue firing as long as the trigger is pulled and there is ammunition available.
6. Safety Features:
- Most modern guns come equipped with safety features, such as manual safeties, trigger guards, and firing pin blocks, to prevent accidental discharge and improve overall safety.
It's important to note that guns can be dangerous and must be handled with care and respect for safety guidelines and regulations.
