  • Why Do Icebergs Flip Over? Causes & Explanations
    1. Asymmetrical Shape

Icebergs have a variety of shapes, ranging from rounded to blocky to long and narrow. When the submerged part of an iceberg is wider than the part above the water, it can cause the iceberg to become unbalanced and flip over.

    2. Shifting Weight

As icebergs melt, they lose mass and their center of gravity changes. This can also cause an iceberg to become unstable and flip over.

    3. Underwater Currents and Winds

Strong currents and winds can push against the side of an iceberg, causing it to tip over.

    4. Seismic Activity

Earthquakes and other seismic events can generate waves and ground vibrations that can cause icebergs to flip over.

    5. Collision with Other Objects

If an iceberg collides with another iceberg, a ship, or a land mass, it can be forced to flip over.

Icebergs can flip over very quickly, and the process can be very dangerous for people who are nearby. In some cases, icebergs that flip over can create tsunamis.
