How Gliders Generate Lift
The main principle behind how gliders work is the generation of lift. Lift is the force that opposes gravity and keeps an aircraft in the air. In gliders, lift is generated by the shape of the wings and the movement of air over them.

Gaining Altitude
Gliders can also gain altitude in certain weather conditions, such as when there is a strong thermal updraft. A thermal is a column of warm air that rises from the ground. When a glider encounters a thermal, it can use the lift generated by the rising air to climb higher into the sky.
Landing
When it is time to land, a glider pilot will use the controls on the glider to reduce the lift generated by the wings. This will cause the glider to descend. The pilot will then choose a landing spot and flare the glider, which means pulling back on the control stick to raise the nose of the glider and slow down its descent. The glider will then land on its landing gear.
