  • Plant Roots: How They Absorb Water and Nutrients from the Soil
The part of a plant that collects water from the ground is the roots.

    Here's why:

    * Roots are usually underground and have a large surface area. This helps them absorb water and minerals from the soil.

    * Root hairs, tiny extensions of the root cells, increase the surface area even further, making absorption more efficient.

    * Once the water is absorbed, it travels up the plant through the xylem, a specialized tissue in the roots, stem, and leaves.
