  • Deciduous Trees: A Guide to Leaf-Dropping Trees & Examples
    Trees that lose their leaves in winter are called deciduous trees. Here are some common examples:

    Broadleaf Deciduous Trees:

    * Maple: Sugar maple, red maple, silver maple, etc.

    * Oak: White oak, red oak, pin oak, etc.

    * Birch: Paper birch, yellow birch, sweet birch, etc.

    * Beech: American beech, European beech

    * Elm: American elm, slippery elm

    * Poplar: Cottonwood, aspen, balsam poplar

    * Willow: Weeping willow, crack willow

    * Ash: White ash, green ash, black ash

    * Chestnut: American chestnut (native, now mostly gone due to blight)

    * Horse Chestnut: (not a true chestnut, but commonly called one)

    * Dogwood: Flowering dogwood, kousa dogwood

    * Hickory: Shagbark hickory, pignut hickory

    * Sycamore: American sycamore, London plane tree

    * Walnut: Black walnut, butternut

    Note: Not all trees in these families are deciduous. For example, some oaks are evergreen, and some pines are deciduous (like the larch).

    These are just some examples, and there are many other deciduous trees out there.
