  • Chaparral, Matorral & Fynbos: Understanding Fire-Resistant Shrubs
The temperate shrublands whose plants are able to survive destructive forces of fire are also known as chaparral, matorral, fynbos, or mallee.

These names are used depending on the geographic location:

    * Chaparral is common in California, USA and Baja California, Mexico.

    * Matorral is used in Spain and Chile.

    * Fynbos is found in South Africa.

    * Mallee is specific to Australia.

While the names may differ, the key characteristic of these ecosystems is the presence of fire-adapted plants that thrive in the face of periodic fires.
