  • Are Leaves Alive? Understanding Leaf Life and Decomposition
A leaf is living when it's attached to a plant. Here's why:

    * It carries out life processes: Leaves perform photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration, which are all essential life functions.

    * It grows and develops: Leaves grow and change throughout their lifespan.

    * It responds to stimuli: Leaves can respond to light, touch, and other environmental factors.

However, once a leaf detaches from a plant, it begins to die and decompose. It then becomes nonliving.
