  • The Essential Functions of Leaves: Oxygen, Water & More
A leaf gives out several things, but the most important are:

    * Oxygen: During photosynthesis, leaves use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create their own food. This process also produces oxygen as a byproduct, which is released into the atmosphere.

    * Water vapor: Through tiny openings called stomata on the underside of the leaf, plants release water vapor into the atmosphere. This process is called transpiration.

    * Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Some plants release VOCs into the atmosphere. These chemicals can be used to attract pollinators, deter herbivores, or even communicate with other plants.

Here are some other things that leaves might give out:

    * Nutrients: Leaves can release some nutrients into the soil through leaf litter decomposition.

    * Heat: Leaves can release heat into the environment, especially during hot weather.

The specific substances a leaf releases can vary depending on the species of plant, the environmental conditions, and the time of year.
