  • How Trees Absorb Water: Understanding Root & Xylem Function
Trees don't drink water in the same way that animals do. They absorb water through their roots.

    Here's how it works:

    * Roots: Tiny root hairs on the roots absorb water from the soil.

    * Xylem: The water then travels up through specialized tubes called xylem, which act like a straw, from the roots to the leaves.

    * Leaves: The leaves use the water for photosynthesis, which is how they make their food.

So, while the whole tree benefits from the water, it's the roots that are responsible for taking it in.
