  • Tundra vs. Desert: Understanding Rainfall and Biomes
Relative to rainfall, the tundra is similar to the desert biome.

    Here's why:

    * Low Precipitation: Both tundras and deserts receive very little rainfall. Tundras are characterized by permafrost, a layer of permanently frozen ground, which limits water infiltration. Deserts receive less than 10 inches of rain per year.

    * Adaptation to Dryness: Plants and animals in both biomes have developed adaptations to survive with limited water. Tundra plants are short and grow close to the ground, while desert plants have deep root systems and thick cuticles to reduce water loss.

While tundras are very cold and deserts are very hot, both biomes share the commonality of being very dry.
