Here's why:
* Weight is the force of gravity acting on an object's mass. It's always directed downwards towards the center of the Earth.
* The normal force is the force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it. It's always perpendicular to the surface.
When you stand on the ground, the Earth pulls you downwards due to gravity (your weight). The ground, in turn, pushes back on you with an equal and opposite force, which is the normal force. This normal force prevents you from falling through the ground and keeps you balanced.
