    The law of conservation of matter states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes. This means that the total amount of matter in a closed system remains constant, even if it changes form. Here's what this means:

    What CAN Change:

    * Physical State: Matter can change its physical state (solid, liquid, gas) without changing its chemical composition. For example, water can freeze into ice, or ice can melt into water.

    * Shape: Matter can be reshaped. For example, you can mold clay into different forms.

    * Position: Matter can be moved from one location to another.

    * Chemical Reactions: Matter can undergo chemical reactions, where atoms are rearranged to form new substances. For example, burning wood combines wood with oxygen to form ash, carbon dioxide, and water. However, the total mass of the reactants (wood and oxygen) equals the total mass of the products (ash, carbon dioxide, and water).

    What CANNOT Change:

    * Total Amount of Matter: The total amount of matter in a closed system always remains the same. This means that even if matter changes its form, the total mass of the system stays constant.

    * Atoms: Atoms themselves are not created or destroyed in ordinary chemical reactions. They are simply rearranged.

    Important Notes:

    * Nuclear Reactions: The law of conservation of matter doesn't apply to nuclear reactions, where matter can be converted into energy, as described by Einstein's famous equation E=mc². This is a separate concept.

    * Closed System: The law of conservation of matter applies only to closed systems, where no matter can enter or leave. In an open system, the total amount of matter can change.

    In summary, the law of conservation of matter tells us that matter can be transformed in various ways, but the total amount of matter in a closed system always stays the same.
