  • Earth's Shadow: Understanding the Dark Side & Night
The part of Earth that does not receive direct sunlight is the night side.

    Here's why:

    * Earth's Rotation: The Earth rotates on its axis, completing one rotation approximately every 24 hours. This rotation causes day and night.

    * Sunlight and Shadow: As the Earth rotates, only the half facing the sun receives direct sunlight. The opposite half, facing away from the sun, is in darkness, experiencing night.

Important Note: Even during night, the Earth still receives some light from the sun, which is reflected off the moon and atmosphere. This light is much dimmer than direct sunlight.
