    The coldest biome on Earth's surface is the tundra.

    While the polar ice caps are even colder, they are not considered a biome because they lack the diversity of plant and animal life characteristic of a biome.

    The tundra is characterized by extremely low temperatures, permafrost (permanently frozen ground), low precipitation, and short growing seasons. It's found in the Arctic and on high mountaintops around the world.
