  • Rainforest Sunlight: Understanding Light Penetration Through Layers
    The layer of the rainforest that gets the least sunlight is the forest floor.

    Here's why:

    * Canopy: The dense canopy of leaves at the top of the rainforest blocks out most of the sunlight.

    * Understory: The layer below the canopy, known as the understory, receives very little direct sunlight. This is where smaller trees, shrubs, and vines grow.

    * Forest Floor: The forest floor is the darkest and receives the least amount of sunlight. Only about 2% of sunlight reaches the forest floor.

    This is why the forest floor is often characterized by:

    * Low light levels

    * High humidity

    * Decomposition of organic matter

    * Specialized plants and animals adapted to low light conditions
