Within microorganisms, the most abundant are bacteria. They are single-celled organisms that are found in almost every environment on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the hottest deserts.

While there are other forms of life, like viruses, which are even smaller and more numerous, they are not considered to be living organisms because they cannot reproduce on their own.
