  • Plant Species on Earth: An Estimated Count & Ongoing Discoveries
It's impossible to give an exact number for how many plant species exist on Earth. Here's why:

    * Constant Discovery: Scientists are still discovering new plant species all the time, especially in remote or unexplored areas.

    * Difficult to Define: Defining what constitutes a separate species can be complex. There are different ways to classify plants, and sometimes there are disagreements about what constitutes a distinct species.

    * Extinction: Sadly, many plant species are going extinct before they can even be discovered.

    However, there are estimates.

    * Roughly 391,000: This is the number of vascular plant species (plants with a system to transport water) that have been identified by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

    * Likely Millions: Some estimates suggest that the total number of plant species could be much higher, perhaps even in the millions, if you include all types of plants, including algae, mosses, and fungi.

The important point is that we are still learning about the incredible diversity of plant life on Earth!
