Natural Resources
* Definition: These are materials or substances that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain. They are essentially gifts of the Earth.
* Examples:
* Renewable: Sunlight, wind, water, forests, fish
* Non-renewable: Coal, oil, natural gas, minerals, fertile soil
* Characteristics:
* Found in nature, not created by humans
* Valuable for their potential economic use
* Can be finite (limited supply) or renewable (naturally replenished)
Resources
* Definition: This is a broader term encompassing anything that can be used to produce goods or services. Resources can be natural, human-made, or a combination of both.
* Examples:
* Natural Resources: See above
* Human Resources: Labor, skills, knowledge, education
* Man-made Resources: Buildings, roads, infrastructure, technology
* Characteristics:
* Can be natural, human-made, or both
* Used to satisfy needs and wants
* Contribute to economic development and well-being
In essence:
* Natural resources are a subset of resources. Every natural resource is a resource, but not every resource is a natural resource.
* Resources are more versatile. They include human-made elements that contribute to production and economic activity.
Think of it this way:
* Imagine a forest: The trees are a natural resource (renewable).
* Now imagine a lumber mill: The mill, tools, and workers are resources (a combination of human-made and human resources).
By using the natural resource (trees), combined with other resources, we can produce lumber, which contributes to the economy.
