The mesophyll is the layer of tissue inside a leaf where most photosynthesis takes place. It's made up of two types of cells:

* Palisade mesophyll: These cells are tightly packed and elongated, maximizing their surface area for light absorption.

* Spongy mesophyll: These cells are more loosely arranged, with air spaces between them. This allows for gas exchange and helps distribute carbon dioxide throughout the leaf.
