  • Ocean Photosynthesis: Understanding the Photic Zone
Photosynthesis takes place in the photic zone of the ocean.

    Here's why:

    * Sunlight: Photosynthesis requires sunlight to provide energy. The photic zone is the upper layer of the ocean where sunlight can penetrate.

    * Phytoplankton: Phytoplankton, the tiny plant-like organisms that perform photosynthesis in the ocean, are primarily found in the photic zone. They need sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into food (sugars) and oxygen.

The depth of the photic zone varies depending on factors like water clarity, latitude, and season. However, it typically extends from the surface down to about 200 meters (650 feet).
