  • Understanding Moss: Why They Need Moisture, Even with Watered Soil
Mosses actually don't thrive in dry climates. They are hydrophytic, meaning they require a moist environment to survive.

    Here's why:

    * Water is essential for their life cycle: Mosses need water for reproduction (releasing spores) and for absorbing nutrients.

    * They lack vascular tissue: Unlike plants with roots and stems, mosses don't have a system to transport water efficiently. They rely on direct absorption through their leaves.

    * Their small size and thin leaves: These features make them prone to desiccation (drying out) in dry environments.

Therefore, you'll find mosses in moist habitats like:

    * Forests: Shaded and humid areas provide ideal conditions.

    * Bogs and swamps: These wetlands offer ample water and nutrients.

    * Moist rocks and walls: They can cling to surfaces with enough moisture.

While mosses can survive brief periods of dryness, they won't flourish in truly arid climates. If you water the soil in a dry environment, it might help mosses survive for a short while, but they won't thrive long-term.
