  • Where Does Rain and Snow Form? Understanding the Troposphere
Rain and snow occur in the troposphere, which is the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere.

    Here's why:

    * Weather Occurs Here: The troposphere is where most of the Earth's weather happens, including the formation of clouds, precipitation, and wind.

    * Temperature Decreases with Altitude: As you go higher in the troposphere, the temperature decreases. This is important for precipitation because it allows water vapor to condense into clouds and eventually fall as rain or snow.

    * Other Layers Are Too Thin or Too Hot: The layers above the troposphere (stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere) are either too thin to hold significant amounts of water vapor or too hot for water to condense into precipitation.
