  • Understanding the Foundations of Tibetan Buddhism: Mahayana & Bon
Lamaism, also known as Tibetan Buddhism, combines two main belief systems:

    1. Mahayana Buddhism: This is the dominant form of Buddhism practiced in Tibet, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. It emphasizes the concept of bodhisattvas, enlightened beings who choose to delay their own liberation to help others achieve enlightenment.

    2. Bon: This is a pre-Buddhist animistic religion indigenous to Tibet. Bon incorporates elements of shamanism, nature worship, and ancestor veneration.

Lamaism, therefore, can be seen as a synthesis of Mahayana Buddhist teachings with indigenous Bon practices.
