  • Stephen Crane and Naturalism in Literature: A Key Figure
The man most closely associated with naturalism is Stephen Crane.

While naturalism as a literary movement had several important figures, Crane is considered a key figure and a pioneer of the style. His works, like "The Red Badge of Courage" and "Maggie: A Girl of the Streets," demonstrated the core tenets of naturalism:

    * Determinism: Characters are shaped by their environment and heredity, with little free will.

    * Objectivity: A detached, scientific approach to storytelling, avoiding sentimentality and focusing on realism.

    * Survival: Characters struggle against the harsh realities of life, often with tragic outcomes.

While other notable authors like Jack London, Theodore Dreiser, and Frank Norris also contributed significantly to the naturalist movement, Stephen Crane's early embrace of the style and his impactful works cemented his place as its most prominent figure.
