  • Pillars of Creation: Unraveling the Name & Cosmic Structure
The Pillars of Creation is a formation of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula. It is called so because it resembles a set of pillars or columns. The pillars are actually composed of cold molecular hydrogen gas, which is warmed up by the radiation of the nearby stars and glows in a variety of colors, including red, green, and blue. The pillars are also home to many newly-forming stars, which can be seen as bright spots in the image.
