The Atacama desert in Chile holds the record for being the driest desert in the world with some localities receiving practically no precipitation in centuries. Despite such inhospitable conditions, some forms of life endure such as lichens and some flowering plants that rely completely on fog as well as a variety of other plant and animal species adapted to harsh desert-like environment.
