  • Understanding the Troposphere: Earth's Life-Supporting Layer
The layer of atmosphere where you live in is called the troposphere. It is the lowest layer of the atmosphere and contains the air we breathe. The troposphere extends from the Earth's surface up to an average altitude of about 10 kilometers (6 miles). The temperature of the troposphere decreases with altitude, and weather conditions such as clouds, rain, and storms are concentrated in this layer.
