    Hurricanes originate over warm ocean waters near the equator. They require a water temperature of at least 26.6 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) to form and sustain themselves. As a hurricane moves over cooler waters or encounters land, it begins to lose strength and eventually dissipates.
