The seven life processes of living things are:
- Organization: All living things are composed of cells, arranged and organized in a complex way. Whether they be single-celled organisms like bacteria, or complex multicellular organisms like humans, all living things rely on the proper functioning of their complex system.
- Metabolism: Metabolism refers to all chemical reactions that occur in living things. It includes taking in nutrients from the environment, breaking them down, and using the energy and components to build and maintain the organism's body. Metabolism also involves the elimination of waste products.
- Responsiveness: Living things respond to changes and stimuli in their environment. This includes reacting to light, heat, touch, chemicals, or other environmental factors. Responsiveness is essential for survival as it allows organisms to adapt to their environment.
- Growth: Living things grow and develop throughout their lives. Growth can be rapid, like in the early stages of life, or gradual, as in the case of long-lived organisms. Growth involves increase in size, but it also includes the development and differentiation of cells.
- Reproduction: Reproduction is the process by which living things create offspring. Offspring resemble their parent organisms due to the passing of genetic material. Reproduction ensures the continuation of species and the transfer of genetic information.
- Adaptation: Adaptation is the process by which living things become better suited to their environment. Adaptations can be physical, behavioral, or physiological. Over time, adaptation allows populations of organisms to thrive in specific environments.
- Homeostasis: Homeostasis refers to the ability of living things to maintain internal balance and stability amid changes in the external environment. For example, humans maintain a relatively constant body temperature, despite fluctuations in the surrounding environment.
