  • Most Dangerous Animal: The Unexpected Threat of Mosquitoes & How to Protect Yourself
While many people may think of large predators like lions, tigers, or bears as the most dangerous animals, the creature that kills the most humans each year is actually the mosquito. These tiny insects are responsible for transmitting diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever, which claim the lives of millions of people worldwide.

How to Protect Yourself from Mosquitoes

There are several steps you can take to protect yourself from mosquito bites and the diseases they can transmit:

    1. Use insect repellent. Apply an insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to your skin and clothing before going outdoors.

    2. Wear long sleeves and pants. When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to cover your skin and make it less accessible to mosquitoes.

    3. Stay indoors at dusk and dawn. Mosquitoes are most active during these times, so try to stay indoors or take extra precautions if you must be outside.

    4. Use mosquito netting. If you're sleeping in an area with a lot of mosquitoes, use mosquito netting to protect yourself from bites.

    5. Dispose of standing water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so empty any containers that can hold water, such as flower pots, birdbaths, or old tires.
