  • Mountain Lion Encounters: Safe Strategies for Staying Safe
If you encounter a mountain lion, it is important to remain calm and try to look larger by making yourself look bigger by raising your arms, waving your jacket, and making loud noises. Do not run, as it will trigger a chase response in the lion. Slowly back away while facing the mountain lion, always walking backward and maintaining eye contact. If you have children or pets with you, keep them close to you and try to stay calm to show dominance. Throwing objects at the lion can also help deter it. Carrying a walking stick or hiking pole and deploying a pocketknife as a deterrent may also be effective. If you are attacked, remember that fighting for your life and causing as much noise and commotion as possible may discourage the lion from continuing its attack.
