The total annual cost of protected areas in 2010 was roughly $6 billion. Of that, just over half ($3.5 billion) went towards the management of nature reserves, national parks, and other wildlife areas. The rest went towards the management of other sites such as world heritage sites, Ramsar sites, and marine protected areas.
