  • Tropical Deforestation & Peatland Loss: A Major Source of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Deforestation and peatland loss are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 11% of global emissions. Peatlands, which are wetland ecosystems with a high organic matter content, are particularly vulnerable to deforestation and drainage for agriculture, as the decomposition of organic matter releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Tropical rainforests, known for their rich biodiversity and role in regulating the global climate, are also subject to extensive deforestation, primarily for logging and the expansion of agriculture. The loss of these forests not only reduces the planet's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide but also contributes to the release of stored carbon through burning and decomposition. Therefore, addressing deforestation and peatland loss is crucial in mitigating climate change and preserving ecosystems.
