  • Carbon Sequestration in Tidal Marshes: A Natural Climate Solution
Tidal marshes are excellent carbon sinks. As grasses and other wetland plants photosynthesize, they transform CO2 into plant material. When these plants die, they sink into the anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment of the marsh; here, anaerobic decomposition proceeds slowly, and dead plant material accumulates as peat. This accumulation sequesters vast amounts of organic carbon over long periods.
