  • Groundhog Day Prediction Accuracy: What the Science Says
In general, the accuracy of groundhog predictions is disputed and subject to interpretation.

According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's own records, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 106 times and not seen it 20 times since 1887. This means that, according to club lore, Phil has predicted winter weather slightly more than half of the time (53%). That number falls to just 39% when only considering "major" snowstorms as verification.

Additionally, many critics also suggest groundhogs might see their shadows regardless of the amount of sunlight on those mornings when clouds or buildings partially obstruct the sun making predictions unreliable.
