Developing a strong racial identity can involve:
* Learning about one's own history and culture
* Exploring and celebrating one's racial heritage
* Building relationships with other Black people
* Seeking out opportunities to engage in social activism and advocacy
* Taking pride in one's racial identity
Several studies have found that Black teens who have a strong racial identity are better able to cope with racism-related stress. For example, one study found that Black teens with a strong racial identity were less likely to experience depression and anxiety in the face of everyday racism. Another study found that Black teens with a strong racial identity were more likely to engage in positive coping strategies, such as seeking support from friends and family and talking about their experiences.
In addition to providing a sense of belonging, self-esteem, and empowerment, racial identity can also help Black teens to develop critical consciousness. This is the ability to understand and critically analyze the ways in which racism operates in society. With critical consciousness, Black teens can better understand the sources of racism and how to challenge it. This can help to reduce their feelings of stress and anxiety and empower them to take action against racism.
