  • Most Deadly Animal: The Surprising Truth About Mosquitoes & How to Protect Yourself
While many people might think of large predators like lions or sharks as the deadliest animals to humans, the truth is that a much smaller creature is responsible for the most human deaths each year: The lowly mosquito. Mosquitoes are estimated to kill around 725,000 people annually from diseases, malaria being the most prominent.

How to protect yourself from mosquitoes

    1. Reduce standing water Mosquitoes love to breed in stagnant water, so it's important to eliminate any potential breeding grounds around your home. Empty birdbaths and flower pots regularly, and clean gutters to prevent water from pooling.

    2. Use screens Keep mosquitoes out of your house by installing screens on windows and doors. Make sure the screens are in good condition and free of holes, and repair any tears or gaps immediately.

    3. Wear long sleeves and pants. In areas where mosquitoes are prevalent, it's a good idea to wear clothing that covers your skin, as long-sleeved shirts and pants, socks, and shoes. This will help protect you from mosquito bites.

    4. Use insect repellent Repellent containing DEET is the most effective mosquito repellent. When using insect repellent, follow the instructions on the product label carefully. If you're going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, especially in areas where mosquitoes are known to be problematic, consider using mosquito netting to protect yourself.
