  • Innovative Uses of Seawater in Modern Agriculture

While seawater won't make anyone sick in small amounts, too much seawater can cause dehydration. Though the high salt content prevents seawater from being used in the same way that freshwater is used, there are uses for seawater currently being developed.

    Vertical Farm

Dubai has developed a new type of farm that uses seawater. A vertical greenhouse farm uses seawater to cool greenhouses and also provide humidity in order to keep water-hungry plants healthy.

    Hydroelectricity

A recent invention pumps seawater up a hill. Then, as the water travels downhill, the force of the water can generate electricity through turbines.

    Bioinsecticides

A new bioinsecticide has been developed that is made from soybeans, starch and seawater. The seawater has to be diluted in order to not harm the plants.

    Methanol

Seawater is now used to make methanol fuel. Salt is separated from the water and then the water is combined with carbon to create the fuel.

    Air Conditioning

Seawater can be used for air conditioning. While salty, seawater still has a cooling effect.
