Grades are an important and necessary part of education because they provide a system of measurements that points to the extent of learning that has taken place. Determining your grade in a class is a simple process that involves basic mathematical procedures. Being able to calculate your grade for a class can help you to know how you're doing in a certain subject during the course of a quarter or semester.

Write down your grades over the course of the class. Arrange the grades according to the category that they fall under, such as tests, exams, homework and quizzes.

Add the grades for each category and divide the total by the number of grades within that category. This will give you an average grade for each category. For instance, if your test grades were 95, 90, 85 and 100, add these four numbers to get a total of 370. Then divide 370 by 4 to get an average test grade of 92.5.

Find out the worth of each category. Your teacher or professor should be able to provide this information. For instance, tests might be worth 30 percent, exams 30 percent, homework 20 percent and quizzes 20 percent of your total grade.

Multiply each percentage in decimal form by the average for that category. For examle, if your test average is 92.5 and tests account for 30 percent of the grade, multiply .30 by 92.5 to get 27.75. Do this for each category.

Add your answers from each category in step four for your total grade.
