  • Converting to Metric on Your TI‑83: A Step‑by‑Step Guide

Calculators have evolved from simple arithmetic tools into sophisticated scientific and graphing devices. The Texas Instruments TI‑83, for example, can graph equations, solve algebraic problems, and convert between units of measurement. To access the built‑in Unit Converter, you must first install the Science Tools application from the TI website. Be sure your calculator firmware is current before you begin.

    Installation

    Step 1

Connect the TI‑Graph Link cable to your computer and to the TI‑83. If your computer only has a 25‑pin serial port, use a 9‑pin to 25‑pin adapter. Follow the on‑screen instructions to install the TI‑Graph Link software.

    Step 2

Press the APPS button. If the Science Tools menu is already active, skip to Step 6.

    Step 3

Highlight SciTools using the arrow keys and press ENTER. A brief information screen will appear.

    Step 4

Press any key to bring up the SELECT A TOOL menu.

    Step 5

Navigate to UNIT CONVERTER with the arrow keys and press ENTER. The Unit Converter menu will open. If you followed Step 2, skip Steps 6 and 7 and continue to the conversion instructions below.

    Step 6

Press 2nd then QUIT to return to the SELECT A TOOL menu.

    Step 7

Highlight UNIT CONVERTER and press ENTER to launch the converter.

    Conversion

    Step 1

Select the category you wish to convert, such as Length, from the Unit Converter menu.

    Step 2

Enter the numeric value you want to convert (e.g., 12) and press ENTER.

    Step 3

Choose the source unit by moving the arrow keys to the desired option (e.g., in for inches) and press ENTER.

    Step 4

Select the target unit (e.g., cm for centimeters) and press ENTER. The converted value will be displayed.

    Things Needed

    • TI‑Graph Link cable
    • 9‑pin to 25‑pin adapter (if required)

    TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)

All conversions display abbreviated unit names (km, mm, etc.). Ensure your calculator has the latest firmware and the Science Tools app installed for the Unit Converter to function.
