  • Easily Solve Rational Equations with Your TI‑83 Plus Calculator: A Step‑by‑Step Guide

By Collier Jackson | Updated Aug 30, 2022

The TI‑83 Plus graphing calculator is a staple for students tackling advanced algebra. While you can always sketch a rational function and read off its roots, the calculator’s built‑in Solver makes finding solutions quick and reliable. This guide walks you through using the Solver to automatically solve any rational equation.

    How to Use the Solver

    1. Press the Math button and select Solver….

    2. In the 0= field, enter your rational equation in standard form. Ensure the expression equals zero; the Solver expects the equation in the form "f(x) = 0".

    3. Press Enter (or the down arrow) to store the equation.

    4. Enter values for any known variables. For the unknown variable, you may provide an initial guess to speed convergence. If omitted, the default guess is zero.

    5. Move the cursor to the variable you wish to solve for.

    6. Press the Alpha [solve] key above the Enter button. The calculator will display the solution for the selected variable.

Tip: Always double‑check the result by substituting it back into the original equation, especially when the Solver returns extraneous solutions.
