    Regrouping is a foundational concept introduced in second‑grade math that allows students to carry or borrow across place values. Mastering it not only improves everyday arithmetic but also builds the confidence needed for higher‑level math and standardized testing.

    Step 1: Identify Missteps

    Start by reviewing a worksheet the student has completed. Highlight each error so the student can see exactly where they went wrong.

    Step 2: Target the First Missed Problem

    Write the first addition problem they missed on a lined sheet of paper. This focused practice helps them concentrate on the specific point of confusion.

    Step 3: Check the Ones Place

    Examine the ones column first. Praise correct work to reinforce positive habits. If the student erred—commonly by omitting the carried‑over “1” above the tens digit—point it out and explain the role of that digit.

    Step 4: Demonstrate Proper Regrouping

    Show the student how to regroup when the sum in the ones place reaches ten or more. Explain that the excess is carried to the tens column, written as a new digit there, while the remainder stays in the ones column. Repeat the same logic for tens, hundreds, thousands, and beyond, ensuring the student understands each place value.

    Step 5: Apply the Same Logic to Subtraction

    Write a subtraction problem that the student missed. If regrouping is needed—such as borrowing ten ones when the ones column contains a zero—demonstrate the process step by step: cross out the tens digit, subtract one, write the result above the tens place, and place a “1” in front of the zero. If a higher place value is zero, illustrate that it becomes a nine and the next column is reduced by one.
