Measuring the dimensions of a rectangular or square space accurately is essential for calculating perimeter and area. This guide explains how to measure length and width using common tools, ensuring your measurements are reliable.
Place the object so that its longer side runs horizontally and its shorter side runs vertically.
Position the end of your measuring device at the left edge of the object.
Extend the device along the entire horizontal edge until it reaches the right edge.
Read the measurement at the right edge, write it down, and record it as the length.
Move the measuring device to the top of the object.
Extend it along the vertical edge until it reaches the bottom.
Read the measurement at the bottom, write it down, and record it as the width.
Measure all four sides if the shape isn’t clearly rectangular. Add the two lengths and two widths to find the perimeter. Multiply length by width to find the area.
Some measuring tools do not start at zero. Align the first mark of your tool with the zero point before measuring to avoid errors.
