Ratios illustrate how two parts of a whole relate. Whether you’re comparing the number of boys to girls in a class, or the amount of oil to sugar in a recipe, understanding a ratio lets you translate that relationship into real‑world numbers.
Think of a ratio as a fraction. The notation 1:10 is equivalent to 1/10. The order matters—1:10 means one part of the first item for every ten parts of the second. Swapping the numbers changes the relationship entirely. For example, a recipe that calls for one part salt to ten parts sugar would be written as 1:10; a 10:1 ratio would mean ten parts salt for every one part sugar, producing a dramatically different flavor.
Like fractions, ratios should be expressed in their simplest form. A ratio such as 3:30 reduces cleanly to 1:10 just as 3/30 simplifies to 1/10.
When you know one part of the ratio, the other part follows directly: for every one unit of the first item, there are ten units of the second. However, cross‑multiplication is a reliable method that scales to more complex ratios.
Suppose a class has a 1:10 ratio of left‑handed to right‑handed students. If there are three left‑handed students, how many right‑handed students are there?
Write the known ratio and the unknown ratio side by side, using a variable x for the missing number:
1:10 = 3:x
Multiply across the diagonal: 1 × x = 3 × 10.

Cross‑multiplication turns a ratio problem into a simple algebraic equation, making it easy to find any missing component. The same approach works for any ratio, whether it’s 1:10, 5:12, or 7:8.
