  • Tons to Gallons: Understanding the Conversion & Examples
    You can't directly convert tons to gallons because they measure different things:

    * Tons measure weight (or mass).

    * Gallons measure volume.

    Think of it like this: you can't say how many inches are in a pound!

    To make a conversion, you need to know what substance you're dealing with.

    Here's why:

    * Water: One gallon of water weighs about 8.34 pounds. So, a ton (2000 pounds) of water would be roughly 240 gallons.

    * Gasoline: One gallon of gasoline weighs about 6.3 pounds. A ton of gasoline would be about 317 gallons.

    To convert correctly, you need to know the density (weight per unit volume) of the substance you're interested in.
